1- Asus Eee Pad Transformer
We love the Asus Eee Pad Transformer. In our opinion, it’s the most compelling Android tablet we’ve yet seen. Not only is it powerful and well featured, it’s designed to work with a keyboard dock which turns it into a fully-fledged Android-powered netbook. What’s more, it costs just £429 on launch, with the keyboard – £379 without. This is the way it’s supposed to be. This is the tablet that changes the game. Look out also for the Asus Eee Pad Slider which comes packing a slide-out keyboard – it’s coming soon and promises great things!
2- Samsung Galaxy Tab Tab 10.1V
Right now the Samsung Galaxy Tab is available on Verizon, but a new 4G version with LTE technology should be available soon. If you get one today it will be using the Android 2.2 operating system, but you should be able to get it with Honeycomb later in 2011. It has a 5MP camera on the back, a 1.3 MP camera on the front, and is powered by a 1.2 GHz Hummingbird processor. One of the cool things about the Samsung Galaxy Tab is that it can function as a WiFi hotspot for up to 5 devices. This is great if you have a WiFi printer or music player and want to conveniently use them over the 4G network. Some users have rated the device as being a bit sluggish when running Flash.
3- HTC Flyer
HTC Flyer is among the most keenly awaited Android based tablets for 2011. HTC Flyer is also going to be the first ever Android based tablet offering from HTC. One of the highlights of this tablet device is that, it comes with a Scribus. But don’t worry, the device does have a capacitive touchscreen as is expected and Scribus extends the functionality of the tablet even further. 4- Lenovo Idea Pad K1
Just released in July, the Lenovo IdeaPad K1 is the company’s first consumer Android tablet. Sex appeal is one of the K1’s greatest strengths. It’s offered with several different color options for the back panel and features a smooth design that, in my opinion, is even more attractive than the iPad 2.
Another impressive feature is the user interface. Stock Honeycomb is common on Android tablets, and any changes are usually not for the best. The K1, however, adds a convenient launcher widget in the middle of the home screen that lets users sort apps into specific categories like Watch (movies) or Listen (music/podcasts). This organization reminds me a lot of libraries in Windows 7. There are a few other extras as well, such as an App Wheel that can be used as a quick-launcher for your favorite apps.
5- Dell Streak 7 & Streak 10
Much to our surprise Dell’s Streak 7 doesn’t have Android 3.0, but runs on 2.2 instead. It’s also restricted to a lower, 800 x 480 native resolution display.
There are some plus points with the screen, though. We found it to be very responsive to our finger gestures, and it uses ultra-strong ‘Gorilla Glass’ to stave away cracks and scratches if bumped or dropped.

7- T-Mobile LG G-Slate
Thanks to its high-quality screen, streaming TV features, and 4G support (if you’re willing to sign a contract), the T-Mobile G-Slate is one of the better Honeycomb tablets on the market today; however, its high no-contract price ensures that it’s not the best.
8- Archos 70 (250GB)
The Archos 70 offers more horsepower and features than any other tablet under $300, but its limitations make it more of a toy than a tool.
9- Acer Iconia Tab A500
Acer’s Android tablet is good looking and offers similar performance to the other Android 3.0 tablets on show here. We like it, but it’s missing a bit of sparkle and there’s not much on show here that we can cling on to. It’s not as stylish as the Galaxy Tab 10.1, and doesn’t offer anything different like the Transformer does with its keyboard.
10- Hannspree Hannspad
This tablet has more in common with Samsung’s current tablet offering, the seven-inch Galaxy Tab, than the new boys when it comes to software. However, it’s a match for them when it comes to hardware grunt. The problem is that it’s let down by the absence of Android 3.0 and the Android Market, an unresponsive touchscreen, poor viewing angles and some shoddy optimisations.
11- Notion Ink Adam
Notion Ink’s take on the Android tablet was different and exciting in equal measure. Offering a heavily modified Android OS, the tablet was supposed to be able to run apps onscreen side-by-side, it was supposed to have a screen that was readable in bright sunlight, it was supposed to be able to host external devices like cameras. But it doesn’t look like many of these pipedreams have been woven into anything even resembling reality. At this point, it’s unclear whether we’ll ever even see one in the UK.
12- View sonic View pad 10s
We called the original Viewpad 10 a stinker, so what about its successor? It runs Android 2.2 with its own Tap UI overlay, there’s a 1GHz processor inside, and there’s a very useful option to give each family member their own account. We wish the iPad had that. The 10s is a vast improvement over its predecessor, although it just can’t compete with the products higher up in this list.
13- Motorola Xoom
The Motorola Xoom was the first Honeycomb tablet to hit the shelves, and while it’s a lovely piece of kit, there’s a snag. It’s just a little too expensive. Current prices are floating around the £459 which is simply too high when you’ve got the Transformer available keyboard-free for £379. In all other respects, this is a tablet that’s worthy of your attention. Solid build quality, decent battery life, good performance. If the price drops by another £50, this could become the iPad rival Motorola wants it to be.
14- View sonic View pad 7
The Viewsonic Viewpad 7 is exactly the same, albeit slightly more expensive than the Linx Commtiva N700 – and confusingly, Viewsonic is marketing it as a smartphone. It’s a terrible smartphone but it’s a fairly competent 7-inch Android tablet: its 600MHz processor isn’t really fast enough for Flash though, not to mention recent Android releases.
15- Creative Ziio
The Creative Ziio 7-inch tablet runs long out-of-date Android 2.1 and has no access to the Android Market. However, it’s a decent media tablet, designed to stream music to wireless speakers and it’s available for under £200. Depending on your needs, this tablet has a chance of being the one.
16- LG G-slate
Though it was technically announced back at CES, T-Mobile just barely talked about the LG G-Slate there, spending more time chatting up Dell’s Streak 7 and letting Motorola’s Xoom get virtually all of the Honeycomb attention. Well, that’s changed today with a handful of official new details: turns out the G-Slate features a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 32GB of internal storage, both a gyroscope and accelerometer, and — this is key — stereoscopic rear-facing video cameras capable of 1080p 3D capture, one of which doubles as a 5 megapixel still camera with LED flash. There’s also a third 2 megapixel camera up front for video chat over T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network or WiFi. Going back to that 3D business for a moment, you’ll need glasses (it’s unclear if they’re active or passive) to enjoy recorded or downloaded 3D content on the G-Slate’s 8.9-inch display — but you’ll also be able to output 1080p video over HDMI to the external display of your choice. Pricing is still an open question, but the companies are now comfortable enough to say that we can expect it “this spring,” so go ahead and start thinking about all the blooming springtime plant life you’ll be filming in three glorious dimensions. Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color is a very capable color touch-screen e-book reader that offers much of the functionality of an Android tablet for half the price of an iPad.
19- Toshiba Tablet
Toshiba’s latest entrant into the tablet market promises great screen quality and a replaceable battery.
Another tablet to run Android Honeycomb, Toshiba’s catchily-named Tablet uses the manufacturer’s Resolution+ software – common to Toshiba’s TVs – that’s designed to improve image quality and enhance standard definition video to make it appear closer to high definition.
The Tablet will also adjust its screen brightness to suit the lighting conditions.
20- Panasonic Viera Tablets
The Viera Tablet comes in three sizes – 4-inch, 7-inch and 10-inch – ranging from smartphone-sized to iPad-sized. All three Viera Tablets run Android 2.2 and are intended to complement Panasonic’s Viera LCD and plasma TVs.
In terms of the hardware, the lack of 3G precludes the inclusion of the standard Android Market for apps, but Panasonic has put its own Viera Market on its Tablets, full of Panasonic-endorsed apps.
21- Advent Vega
When we first tested the Advent Vega back in December 2010, it was a decent little unit. First-gen Tegra 2 power in a budget device meant there was a lot of bang to be had for not much buck. However, there is not currently an official Android 3.0 update incoming for the Vega so with the presence of more worthy competitors in 2011, the Vega has lost some of its sparkle.
22- Samsung Galaxy Tab
Samsung’s original 7-inch Galaxy Tab is looking a bit old and tired now, and we weren’t big fans of it when it was brand new anyway. However, with heavy discounts, this tablet is now available for under £300 and there are plenty of attractive 3G package deals available. There’s no Android 3.0 here though, which makes this Tab little more than a smartphone on steroids.
23- LG Optimus Pad
The consumer electronics giants are throwing everything at 3D, and LG has decided that its first Android tablet should play a role in its ’3D is the best’ hearts and minds mission. The tablet has dual-5MP cameras which work together to shoot 3D images and record 3D footage. Cool, huh? The problem is that there’s no 3D screen, so if you want to watch your 3D movies you’ll need to either plug the tablet into a 3D TV or watch in anaglyph 3D on the tablet’s screen. If you’re crazy about 3D, this is your next Android tablet.
